How Does Tap Water Iontophoresis Work?

Tap water serves as a conductive medium between the skin and electrodes. When the electrical current passes through the water, ions migrate along the skin’s nerve pathways, temporarily reducing the nerve impulses that overstimulate sweat glands.

  • No drugs, no injections, no surgery.
  • Only regular tap water and controlled electrical current.

By interrupting the sweat signal pathway directly at the source, iontophoresis significantly reduces perspiration in treated areas while preserving the natural function of the sweat glands.

Treatment Areas

Sweaty palms can severely impact daily tasks, cause social discomfort, and lead to cold, clammy hands. Hands are placed in shallow trays filled with tap water during treatment. The water level reaches about one-third of the way up the fingers, ensuring full contact across the treatment surface.

Constant foot sweating can cause not only discomfort but also lead to skin breakdown, odor, fungal infections, and athlete’s foot. Feet are placed into water-filled basins, typically requiring slightly higher current levels due to the thicker skin and larger treatment surface.

The underarms are one of the most common and socially distressing areas affected by hyperhidrosis. For this treatment, sponge pouches soaked in tap water are positioned beneath the arms. Inside each sponge is a soft silicone electrode, designed to ensure even current distribution while protecting the skin.

Direct Current vs Pulsed Current

Our Saalio® iontophoresis devices offer two current modes: Direct Current (DC) and Pulsed Current (PC) to suit different comfort levels, skin sensitivities, and treatment goals.

DC delivers a continuous electrical current throughout the session, which typically results in faster and stronger therapeutic outcomes. This mode is ideal for achieving initial sweat reduction in most users.

PC delivers short bursts of current with pauses in between, creating a gentler sensation. It’s often preferred by individuals with sensitive skin, younger users, or those in the long-term maintenance phase.

Both current modes are fully adjustable, giving you complete control to personalise your treatment — balancing effectiveness with comfort as your skin adapts over time.

Treatment Protocol

For best results, complete 4 to 5 sessions per week, with each session lasting 15 to 20 minutes. This routine is typically continued for 4 weeks during the initial treatment phase.

Many users notice the first improvements within the first week, with steady sweat reduction building over the initial phase.

After the initial phase, continue with 1 session per week on an ongoing basis. The frequency can be gradually reduced as long-term sweat control is established and maintained.

Since the effects of iontophoresis are reversible, ongoing maintenance sessions are required to sustain results.
