How Does Tap Water Iontophoresis Work?
Tap water serves as a conductive medium between the skin and electrodes. When the electrical current passes through the water, ions migrate along the skin’s nerve pathways, temporarily reducing the nerve impulses that overstimulate sweat glands.
- No drugs, no injections, no surgery.
- Only regular tap water and controlled electrical current.
By interrupting the sweat signal pathway directly at the source, iontophoresis significantly reduces perspiration in treated areas while preserving the natural function of the sweat glands.
Treatment Areas
Sweaty palms can severely impact daily tasks, cause social discomfort, and lead to cold, clammy hands. Hands are placed in shallow trays filled with tap water during treatment. The water level reaches about one-third of the way up the fingers, ensuring full contact across the treatment surface.
Constant foot sweating can cause not only discomfort but also lead to skin breakdown, odor, fungal infections, and athlete’s foot. Feet are placed into water-filled basins, typically requiring slightly higher current levels due to the thicker skin and larger treatment surface.
The underarms are one of the most common and socially distressing areas affected by hyperhidrosis. For this treatment, sponge pouches soaked in tap water are positioned beneath the arms. Inside each sponge is a soft silicone electrode, designed to ensure even current distribution while protecting the skin.
Direct Current vs Pulsed Current
Our Saalio® iontophoresis devices offer two current modes: Direct Current (DC) and Pulsed Current (PC) to suit different comfort levels, skin sensitivities, and treatment goals.
DC delivers a continuous electrical current throughout the session, which typically results in faster and stronger therapeutic outcomes. This mode is ideal for achieving initial sweat reduction in most users.
PC delivers short bursts of current with pauses in between, creating a gentler sensation. It’s often preferred by individuals with sensitive skin, younger users, or those in the long-term maintenance phase.
Both current modes are fully adjustable, giving you complete control to personalise your treatment — balancing effectiveness with comfort as your skin adapts over time.
Treatment Protocol
For the first 10–14 days, your goal is to trigger a reduction in sweat. You can do this with daily sessions of 10 minutes each, or four sessions per week of 15 minutes each. It's best to start with a low, comfortable current and increase it gradually as you get used to the treatment. Direct current is often preferred for this initial phase, but you can use pulsed current if you have sensitive skin.
Once you’ve started to see a reduction in sweat, the next 3–4 weeks are about stabilising those results. Continue with daily 10-minute sessions or four 15–20 minute sessions per week. During this phase, you should alternate the polarity between sessions, either manually or by using the AUTO mode, and stick with the current type that feels most comfortable for you.
In the maintenance phase, the goal is to keep your skin at your desired level of dryness with ongoing care. Most people find that one or two sessions per week, lasting 15 to 20 minutes each, are enough to sustain their results. Simply continue alternating the polarity as you did in the previous phase, and feel free to adjust the frequency if you notice any increase in sweating.
If treatment is paused, sweating may gradually return. Resuming your regular routine typically restores results.
