The Initial Phase of Iontophoresis: What to Expect in Your First 4 to 6 Weeks

Starting iontophoresis comes with a common question: what is actually going to happen in those first few weeks? This guide walks you through the initial treatment phase step by step, covering the session structure, what sensations to expect, when you will likely see results, and what the transition into maintenance looks like.

Understanding the Initial Phase

The initial phase of iontophoresis is the intensive stretch at the start of treatment. Its job is to build a reduction in sweating as quickly as your skin comfortably allows. It runs until your sweating has come down to the level you want, which for most people is roughly 4 to 6 weeks, before you ease into the lighter maintenance routine.

How Often to Treat in the Initial Phase

Have a session at least every second day, with a rest day in between so your skin can recover. Daily sessions are also fine if your skin tolerates them well. Each session should last at least 15 minutes. The Saalio® device is set to direct current if tolerated, with a starting current of 1 to 3 mA. You increase gradually until you feel a mild tingling, not painful or burning.

An important point from the Saalio® instructions: during the initial phase, treat hands and feet separately rather than simultaneously. This helps you establish the right current settings for each area and allows the therapeutic effect to be identified more quickly on each limb. Once your settings for hands and feet are similar, you can treat them together.

Current Direction and What to Expect

Change the current direction regularly so both sides of the treated area receive equal benefit. You can reverse direction manually between sessions or use the AUTO setting, which handles this automatically mid-session. Some people notice a subtle improvement in sweating within the first 10 to 14 days; others take a little longer. A temporary slight increase in sweating during the first few sessions is documented and normal, and it settles as treatment continues. From that first change, sweating should progressively reduce over a further 3 to 4 weeks, which is why the total initial phase is roughly 4 to 6 weeks for most people.

What Sessions Feel Like

Most people describe the sensation as a mild tingling, a faint warmth, or a slight prickling feeling. At well-calibrated settings it is entirely tolerable. If you feel sharp stinging, burning, or pain, the current is too high, so reduce it. Current that is barely perceptible may not produce the therapeutic effect, so finding the right level is a gentle process of adjustment. Mild skin redness or dryness after sessions is normal, and applying a rehydrating cream after treatment helps.

Transitioning to Maintenance

When sweating has reduced to a level you are satisfied with, you move into the maintenance phase: about once a week for 15 to 20 minutes. This continues for as long as you want to maintain results. It requires significantly less time than the initial phase and fits easily into a weekly routine. Many people find they can go weeks between sessions as their response builds over time. Common Questions During the Initial Phase

A few questions come up regularly. One is about current intensity: if sessions feel completely uneventful and results seem slow, incrementally increasing the current over several sessions is worthwhile. Another is about treating multiple areas: if treating both hands and feet, treat them in separate sessions during the initial phase to establish optimal settings for each area independently, and combine them only once your settings for both are similar. If you notice unexpected skin sensitivity, switching to pulsed current mode or applying a fragrance-free moisturiser after sessions usually helps. Continuing at the recommended frequency, and checking in with us at hello@sudorcure.com if something seems off, is the right response.

Tracking Your Progress

Keeping a brief log during the initial phase is genuinely useful. Note the date, current setting, session duration, and a simple 1 to 5 rating of how sweating felt that day. It takes thirty seconds per session and gives you a clear picture of whether things are moving in the right direction. Most people notice that the numbers trend downward over two to four weeks. Seeing that trend is motivating and helps you stay consistent when the initial phase feels long.

If you notice no change at all after two weeks of consistent sessions, the most common reasons are current level too low, sessions too short, or water not covering the treatment area adequately. All of these are easily corrected. For reassurance on safety while you build the routine, see is iontophoresis safe, or reach out at hello@sudorcure.com and we can help you troubleshoot.

Staying Consistent

Persistence through the initial phase matters more than perfection. Missing an occasional session is fine, the protocol is robust enough to accommodate normal life. What matters is returning to the routine promptly and maintaining overall consistency across the four to six week window. Most people who complete the full initial phase with reasonable consistency see meaningful results.
